Mt. Pleasant Town Council to decide on texting ban ordinance

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The Mt. Pleasant Town Council will decide Tuesday night whether or not a proposed texting-while-driving ban becomes reality.

The texting ban will undergo a final reading at Tuesday's town council meeting. On August 13, the proposed ban passed its first reading 6 to 3.

If passed, the ordinance will prohibit drivers in Mt. Pleasant from looking a text message, reading email, or sending pictures while driving.

According to Councilman John Burn, the proposed ordinance could be problematic.

"It's going to be tough for the police to enforce this; they would have to potentially subpoena phones," the councilman said.

The texting-while-driving ban would carry a minimum fine of $50.

A previously proposed ordinance banning the use of all electronic devices while driving failed during the August 13 meeting.
