Neighbors say woman who died in fire was familiar face in community

CROSS, SC (WCSC) - The cause of a fire that killed a 77 year old woman is under investigation.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office says the autopsy is complete, but officials are still waiting to release the cause of death for Patricia Ham.

Deputies say the fire started at about 5:30a.m. Tuesday. The cause of the blaze has not been released. Authorities say it's routine for SLED's arson unit to investigate any time a fire causes a death.

Neighbors say Ham was a familiar face in the community.

"Supporting the children and children's entertainment, and doing the outdoor things with wildlife action," said restaurant owner Ray Sedgewick. His restaurant Mac Daddy's was one of Ham's favorite places.

When the blaze broke out, neighbors were the first to call 911. The flames destroyed Ham's home then worked its way next door, damaging houses on each side of it.

Ham's son was home at the time of the blaze, but escaped. Neighbors say he tried to go back for his mom, but couldn't save her.
