MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

Motorists in Mt. Pleasant will soon be banned from texting while driving.

In a 6-3 vote, Mt. Pleasant Town Council passed the final reading of an ordinance to amend the town's code to outlaw the practice of texting while driving.

Councilwoman Thomasena Stokes-Marshall says the rule will likely go into effect within 60 days, as the town must first place signs warning drivers of the change.

Drivers caught texting while behind the wheel can face a minimum fine of $50.
