CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The first hurricane of what forecasters predicted would be a very active season has formed west of the Cape Verde Islands.
The National Hurricane Center announced at 5 a.m. Wednesday that Tropical Storm Humberto had strengthened to a hurricane.
Hurricane Humberto has winds of 75 mph, and is moving north-northwest at 8 miles per hour. The storm will start to weaken in the coming days and forecasters say it poses no threat to the east coast.
According to CNN, Humberto fell just three hours short of setting a record for the latest first hurricane to form in the Atlantic Ocean.
