NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 22-year-old fugitive is behind bars after authorities say he led police on a chase on a stolen scooter in North Charleston.
The North Charleston Police Department charged Maurice Scroggins with failure to stop for blue light, receiving stolen goods and driving under suspension.
Scroggins was given a $20,000 bond Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday afternoon, a police officer saw Scroggins on a scooter avoid a stop sign by riding through a grass field on Elder Avenue. The officer reported Scroggins made no attempt to stop after the officer turned on his emergency lights.
A police report states Scroggins continued on Elder Avenue, turned left on Deacon Street and drove 200 feet before dumping the scooter and running.
Authorities say they spotted Scroggins running into a home on Charter Drive. The owner of the home, Scroggins' grandmother, said her grandson ran inside the house, and gave investigators consent to search her residence.
Officers say they found Scroggins hiding underneath the covers of a bed.
A record check revealed Scroggins was wanted by the North Charleston Police Department for three active warrants.
