Two men are dead after authorities say a motorist crashed while fleeing a checkpoint on College Park Road early Thursday morning.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said 52-year-old Gerald Washington and 50-year-old Dwayne Pierce, both from Summerville, died in the wreck.

According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County deputies and South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers were manning a driver’s safety checkpoint around 11:57 p.m. Wednesday when a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville driven by Washington sped through, putting deputies and troopers in danger.

One deputy and one trooper left the checkpoint to try and pull Washington over, but authorities said he continued to flee, turning onto Highway 17-A and then turning left on Ridge Church Road.

Officials say the speeding vehicle then lost control at a slight curve in the road, left the roadway, and struck a tree.

Washington was hospitalized, but later died. Pierce, the passenger, died at the scene.  Salisbury said Pierce was not wearing his seatbelt.

Deputies continue to investigate the accident and are working with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.
