Dorchester Co. jail employee charged after $80K goes missing

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Dorchester County Detention Center employee was arrested Friday on charges of embezzlement after $80,000 went missing from the jail.

State Law Enforcement Division agents arrested Lillian Thomas, 44, of Walterboro, and charged her with breach of trust over $10,000 and misconduct in office.

Dorchester County officials became aware of the issue after a Aug. 28 audit revealed $80,306.10 in cash and money orders were unaccounted from bank deposits between January and the end of July this year.  Officials contacted SLED to conduct an investigation.

SLED agents say Thomas later admitted to stealing an "unknown amount" in cash deposits from the jail's financial record system.  Thomas had "unlimited access" to the system, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Thomas was booked at the Dorchester County Detention Center.
