SC State Topples Alabama A&M 32-0 At Dawson Stadium

South Carolina State held Alabama A&M to a career low rushing enroute to a 32-0 shutout victory over the visiting Bulldogs Saturday at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium.

SC State proved to be the dominating factor in the battle of the Bulldogs limiting AAMU to -3-yards rushing on the day. The Bulldogs improve to 1-2 on the season, while Alabama A&M falls to 1-2.

"First of all, I am glad we got a win and it was nice to get a shutout, a nice accomplishment," said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. "But, we need to be more consistent on offense. We were without a couple of offensive lineman (C.J. Wilson and Jairon Harrison)."

SC State got off to an early start jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter off a 33-yard field goal by senior kicker Nick Belcher at the 10:08 mark early in the first. Red-shirt sophomore running back Justin Taylor scored first rushing touchdown on the day with a 15-yard scamper. Belcher connected on his second field goal of the quarter on a 31-yarder with a 1:37 remaining in the quarter.

Senior wide receiver Tyler McDonald dazzled the crowd once again 72-yard touchdown catch from quarterbackRichard Cue to increase the lead 20-0 with 6:23 remaining before the half. The Bulldogs defense played lights out with junior defense end Alex Glover causing a key safety in the early third quarter , leading to Belcher connecting on his third field goal of the night on a 34-yarder to push the lead to 25-0.

Pough stated, "We got some breaks early and that really put them in the hole. I take my hats off the Coach (Anthony) Jones and his staff; they made us settle for some field goals so we had to work hard to put them away."

Taylor closed out the night on 2-yard punch for his second rushing touchdown on the day with 0:49 seconds remaining in regulation. SC State recorded its first shutout on the season with the win, while amassing 406 total yards on offense.

Freshman running back Dondre Brown and Justin Taylor led the rushing attack with 64 yards each on the ground. Cue threw 9-of-19 passing for 147-yards and one touchdown, while the offense converted on a season-high 24 first downs in the victory.

Senior linebacker Joe Thomas spearheaded the defense with a nine tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss for 22 yards. Junior linebacker Reggie Owens, defensive end Reggie Carter, and defensive back Sheldon Robinson finished with five tackles each.

SC State returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 21) when they face Benedict College in the Palmetto Capital City Classic held at Williams-Brice Stadium. Kick-off is 4 p.m.
