CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Authorities at SPAWAR have confirmed a number of their employees stationed at the Washington Naval Yard in the District of Columbia, the site of a mass shooting Monday, are all safe and accounted for.
The shooting, which happened inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building around 8:15 a.m., left at least 12 people dead.
Tommy Groves, Chief of Media for SPAWAR Public Affairs, said 158 of their employees were stationed at the yard, but none were affected by the tragedy. About 3,000 people work in the yard.
The alleged shooter, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis of Ft. Worth, Texas, was confirmed dead. Alexis, a Navy veteran, was a native of Brooklyn, according to the FBI.
