ST. STEPHEN, SC (WCSC) - Officials say an oil spill at St. Stephen Powerhouse has been contained, and clean-up is underway.
A minor oil spill was reported at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District's St. Stephen Powerhouse around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials say the spill took place in the confining structures of the rediversion canal, occurring during routine maintenance. The spill involved hydraulic oil from a piece of equipment that controls the speed of the hydro-electric turbine.
According to a release, operations were immediately stopped and oil absorbent booms were deployed to contain the spill. An environmental contractor has been called to remove all the spilled oil.
The cause of the oil spill is under investigation.
