WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Piggly Wiggly says they are closing one of their oldest West Ashley locations, several days after announcing the sale of 14 Lowcountry stores to Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter.
According to a Piggly Wiggly spokesman, the Northbridge Piggly Wiggly on Sumar Street will close its doors.
The store has been open since 1974, and SC Rep. Wendell Gilliard is fighting to keep it open. The lawmaker said Tuesday he planned on meeting with Leon Stavrinakis, another state representative from Charleston, and Mayor Joe Riley to seek other options for the store.
"It saddens me to hear that we are losing a great and historical business in the community. There are many citizens in the West Ashley area that depend on the fine wholesome service that the employees have displayed and the store has provided over the years."
A date has not been set for the closure.
