WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Police say they used a taser on a drunk driver after he led them on a chase in Walterboro early Sunday.
According to a Walterboro Public Safety incident report, officers were patrolling East Washington Street around 2 a.m. when they saw a Ford truck struggling to stay in one lane of traffic. Police said the driver made a "hard left turn" onto Forest Hills Road, and drifted into the opposite lane of traffic while doing so.
That maneuver was enough for police, who activated their blue lights to attempt a traffic stop, according to the report. Officers said there were several places for the driver, 43-year-old Gabino Caudillo, to pull over, but he continued on, so the siren was activated on the cruiser.
Officers said Caudillo continued onto Hiers Carner Road before he pulled into a yard in the 500 block and bailed out of the vehicle. Police said they told Caudillo to get on the ground four times before shooting him with an X26 taser.
Caudillo then fell to the ground and was taken into custody, according to the report. He was treated by EMS and taken to the Colleton County Detention Center, where he refused to take a breathalyser test.
He is charged with driving under the influence and failure to stop for blue lights.
