COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Colleton County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man said he was shot and robbed while trying to hitch a ride on Sunday outside Walterboro.

According to Ted Stanfield, sheriff's office spokesman, a 26-year-old man walked up to a Cumberland Street home around 11:30 p.m. seeking help after he was shot in the leg.

The man told police he was walking down Windwood Street when a black Honda sedan drove by.  The man said he flagged the car down and asked for a ride to the store.  The victim said the driver agreed so he pulled out his wallet to give him gas money.  The victim said the driver then grabbed his wallet and told him to get out of the car before he pulled out a handgun and shot him in the leg.

The man told investigators the driver was a clean-shaven black male with short hair, weighing about 190 pounds and standing 5'10" to 6' tall.

Emergency officials took the man to Colleton Medical Center for treatment.

Anyone who may have more information about this shooting and robbery is asked to contact the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at 843-549-2211 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
