DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Two people were taken to the hospital early Thursday after their SUV caught fire off Interstate 26 following an accident involving an 18-wheeler.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the wreck happened in the westbound lanes of I-26 near Second Bend Road around 6:40 a.m. At the time of the wreck, first responders were already stationed nearby on the other side of the interstate for an earlier wreck involving an 18-wheeler.
Both lanes of I-26 westbound were closed as fire crews worked to extinguish flames which torched the vehicle. A viewer said the flames reached a nearby tree canopy about 20 feet in the air.
The road was reopened just before 8 a.m.
Troopers told Live 5 Reporter Mark Davenport an 18-wheeler was involved, but would not say exactly how. The wreck remains under investigation.
The condition of the occupants of the SUV is unknown at this time.
