NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - North Charleston police have arrested a man following an armed robbery at a grocery store on Remount Road.
Police arrested 29-year-old Ashley Michael Ireland hours after the robbery happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Food Lion at 1213 Remount Road.
Employees told investigators a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and armed with a black handgun entered the store and approached a clerk at the register before demanding she empty the cash drawer into his blue duffel bag.
After emptying the register, another employee was led to the store's safe and forced to open it. The suspect took money from the safe and put it in his bag before fleeing towards the Hardee's nearby.
Police arrived on the scene and used a K-9 to conduct a track for the suspect, and found the duffel bag and a black hoodie behind the SAIC building at 5617 N. Rhett Avenue. Police said most of the stolen money was found in the bag, but not all.
While the store employees said the suspect was black, police spokesman Spencer Pryor said a review of surveillance video from the store and statements from witnesses standing outside the store confirmed Ireland was the culprit.
Ireland is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing. He is charged with armed robbery, pointing a firearm, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
