BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - If everything goes according to plan, residents of downtown Beaufort and tourists could have free Wi-Fi service by the end of the year.

Main Street Beaufort USA is working with Hargray Communications on the idea.

Main Street Beaufort executive director LaNelle Fabian says transmission equipment could be set up in the pavilion and playground at city's Waterfront Park. That would require city permission.

City manager Scott Dadson says Fabian has been working with city staff on zoning, building-code and other issues.

Fabian says the service is expected to cost about $1,000 a month. She said the cost could be offset by selling advertising on a Web page users would have to access to get online.
