Fire at Savannah Highway sign shop

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency crews are investigating a structure fire at a business on Savannah Highway that shut down traffic late Thursday evening.

Nathan Murtaugh, Fire Marshal with the St. Andrews Fire Department, says the fire broke out at the Robert and Sons Sign Company located on 3915 Savannah highway around 9:10 p.m.

Murtaugh says crews responded within five minutes of receiving the call to find the fire had already broken through the roof near the front of the building. The fire was under control by 10 p.m.

Roughly 30% of the building was damaged in the blaze, according to Murtaugh

Officials with the sheriff's office say the nature and origin of the fire is still undetermined.

The blaze caused the highway to be shut down in both directions Thursday night but has since reopened.

Also assisting were the Charleston Fire Department and St. Johns Fire Department.

Officials say one firefighter was taken to the hospital for a heat related illness as a result of the fire. The firefighter has been treated and released.
