3 bear cubs found in SC to be returned to wild

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Three bear cubs found abandoned in a box in the South Carolina mountains last winter are going to be returned to the wild this fall.

Dana Dodd of Appalachian Bear Rescue in Townsend, Tenn., tells The Associated Press that the three cubs have been staying at the nonprofit facility in recent months. After they were found in March, one of the cubs was treated for a couple of weeks at the Animal Forest at the Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site in Charleston. Then it was taken to Tennessee.

The bears each now weigh about 70 pounds.

Dodd says the bears will be released by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, likely in November.

That would be after the two week bear hunting season in Upstate.
