Redshirt sophomore Dondre Lewis-Freemanrushed for a game-high 140 yards on 18 carries and touchdown to lead SC State to, 30-6 ,victory over Hampton before a season-high crowd 17, 139 on YOUTH/ROTC Day Saturday at O.C. Dawson Stadium.
The Bulldogs improve to 3-2 overall, 1-0 in the MEAC, while the Pirates fall to 0-5, 0-1 in the league. Hampton begins the season at 0-5 the first time since becoming an FCS school.
"We won the ball game, but what we want to do is get a little better each week," said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. "The one thing was we were able to run the football and I was glad to see that."
SC State jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead on a 10-yard run by freshman running back Dondre Brown at the 9:56 mark in the first. Brown found the end zone for his second score of the day on a 1-yard punch with 2:49 remaining in the half to give the Bulldogs a 16-0 lead.
Hampton connected on a 43-yard field-goal by redshirt Freshman Anthony Prevost with 0:02 seconds remaining to close out the first-half. SC State led 16-3 during intermission. Prevost kicked his second field goal of the day on a 31-yarder to cut the lead to 16-6 with 8:08 remaining in the third quarter.
Freeman-Lewis scored his first career rushing touchdown on an 8-yard run midway through the third to extend the Bulldogs lead to 23-6. Senior defense back Darius Drummond sealed the victory on a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown to give SC State their first conference win of the season.
"Well I was given an opportunity when a couple of backs went down," said Freeman-Lewis. "I've been hungry since joining the team here. I knew about the great tradition we had here at SC State and I wanted to be a part of that."
Brown who started in place of injured starting running back Justin Taylor finished with career-high 86-yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Richard Cue led the way throwing 16-of-27 for 184 yards and one interception. Sophomore wide receiver Taquan West finished with a team-high six catches for 56-yards.
Pough stated, "Our defense played really well. I thought we had things under control most of the game. The Aggies are playing well at 3-0 we will have our hands full next week."
The Bulldogs defense played lights out once again limited their opponent to six points on the day. Junior defense end Andrew Carter had a monster day with 7 tackles (6 solo), 3.5 sacks, and 4 tackles for loss (TFL). Senior linebacker Joe Thomas led the team with 9 tackles, while sophomore Reggie Owens added 7 and 2.5 TFL's.
SC State returns to action on next week when they take on MEAC foe the Aggies of N.C. A&T in the Atlanta Classic in the Georgia Dome. Kick-off is 4 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU.
