WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Walterboro Public Safety officers arrested a woman last Friday after her young nephew was found outside in the road after apparently walking away from the home alone.
Officers said they responded to the Druid Hills II apartment complex at 189 Beach Road around 8 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of a toddler in the road. They arrived and met with two witnesses who said they saw the child walking in the busy road, about 1,500 feet from where the apartment was located.
The witnesses did not know who the baby belonged to, so officers made contact with the apartment manager, who believed she knew where the child was supposed to be. When they made contact at apartment E1, officers said they found the door wide open and other children sitting in the living room unattended.
Police said the adults in the house were in the bedroom asleep. One of those adults, 21-year-old Candance McDonald, was supposed to be caring for the wandering toddler.
McDonald told police she'd agreed to watch the child that morning for her sister, but claimed she was so tired since she'd just gotten off work she decided to lay down while the three toddlers watched TV in the living room.
McDonald said she was unaware the child could open the door. She also said she didn't realize the child was gone until the apartment manager showed up at her door.
The toddler was returned to the care of his mother.
McDonald was arrested on a charge of child neglect. She was taken to the Colleton County Detention Center.
