Bus driver hurt in Colleton County school bus accident

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A Colleton County school bus driver was hospitalized following a school bus accident Tuesday morning.

According to Colleton County Fire officials, crews worked for 45 minutes to pull the driver out of the bus, following an accident on Pierce Road near Brocktown Road around 6:08 a.m.  The driver was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment.

According to authorities, no students were on board.

Officials said the driver apparently ran off the road into a ditch and hit some trees, before being crushed on the driver's side of the bus, trapping the bus driver.

Authorities said a hydraulic ram was used to push the steel roof off the bus driver, and the steering wheel had to be removed.

It did not appear as though the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident, officials say.
