Authorities release video of detention officer allegedly assaulting inmate

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have released video which appears to show a former detention officer assaulting an inmate at the Berkeley County Detention Center.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents arrested 28-year-old Thomas Justin Mims last month and charged him with third-degree assault and battery for the Aug. 19 incident.

The video shows Mims escorting an inmate at the center at 4:55 a.m. Authorities say Mims is then seen "purposefully" using his shoulder to shove the inmate in the back.

According to court records, Mims then pushed the inmate against the wall and punched him in the face.

Court records state the video along with witness statements showed that Mims force against the inmate "appeared unnecessary and excessive and constituted an assault."

Mims was locked up at the Berkeley County Detention Center. SLED conducted the investigation at the request of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
