Fire destroys furniture warehouse in Berkeley County

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A Thursday morning fire destroyed a furniture warehouse in St. Stephen.

The main building of the Oliver-Clarke furniture store, which has been around for more than 40 years, was not damage but its warehouse nearby was heavily damaged.

The owner, John Clarke said he was in the main building on 3891 Byrnes Drive when the fire started and said he didn't know about the fire until someone stopped by and told him smoke was coming from the warehouse.

Clarke said it all started when he plugged in a used refrigerator to make sure it worked, and 40 minutes later, it was on fire.

Clarke says he called 911 just after 8:30 a.m. and fire fighters were still at the scene two hours later. Clarke says the carpet stored in the building caught fire several times.

No one was hurt in the fire and owner says the main building is still open for business.

Clarke said he expects a loss of more than $125,000 from the fire.
