MT. PLEASANT, SC (AP) - South Carolina Congressman Mark Sanford says he's calling back to work all of his furloughed staff members now that there seems to be agreement in Washington that government workers will be paid eventually.
Sanford said Monday he's ending furloughs for his office staff beginning Tuesday. He says he sent home employees without pay then the partial government shutdown took effect last week.
Sanford says things have changed after the U.S. House of Representatives this weekend unanimously passed legislation promising all federal employees will receive back pay once the shutdown ends. The Senate could act on the measure this week.
Sanford says he believes since it's clear employees will be paid, they should get to work. The Republican lawmaker says anything less would amount to a taxpayer-subsidized vacation.
