CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A 53-year-old man is behind bars after authorities say he was spotted walking down the road with a stolen tool set, moments after a woman caught him inside her apartment.

William Nelson of downtown Charleston was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with first-degree burglary.

Charleston police were called out to an apartment on Cleveland Street around 4:20 a.m. after authorities say a woman saw Nelson enter her apartment and look around "as if he was looking for something to take."

The victim told police she confronted Nelson, who then left her apartment and went upstairs. She then spotted him leaving the apartment building with a black drill box.

An incident report states Nelson was stopped by police moments later one block from the apartments.

Police say Nelson stole a Craftsman cordless drill set that was sitting outside another unit in the apartment building.

Nelson is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.
