ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - An Easley man has been sentenced to federal prison for sending a letter threatening to kill U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham.

The Independent-Mail of Anderson reports (http://bit.ly/160Owm3) 32-year-old Simon Peter Long was sentenced to 87 months in prison.

Before announcing the sentence, Senior U.S. District Judge G. Ross Anderson noted that Long told FBI agents that he had purchased a .30-06 Ruger rifle and a scope six months before he sent the letter to Graham's office in Pendleton in November 2012.

Asked why he wanted to kill Graham, Long said he didn't really know and added, "It was really stupid, is what it was."

Long pleaded guilty in June to a charge of mailing a threatening communication to Graham. He faced a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
