Teenager accused of shooting man multiple times following argument

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

A teenager is accused of shooting a 50-year-old man multiple times following an argument on Seabrook Island.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has charged 16-year-old Zajuan Travist James of Seabrook Island with attempted murder.

At 12:30 a.m. on Monday, deputies responded to the area of Seabrook Center Road for a report of a gunshot victim.

Authorities located the 50-year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the hand and abdomen. The victim said he had been shot while he was walking in the area. After the shooting, the victim walked to a nearby family member's home to seek help.

The sheriff's office says as the investigation ensued, it was learned that the victim had been involved in a verbal altercation with James Sunday afternoon.

A report states that just prior to the shooting, the victim and James ran into each other again as they were each walking on Seabrook Center Road. The sheriff's office says James reportedly took out a gun, fired several rounds at Jenkins, then fled the area.

Deputies made contact with James at his home on Detour Road.

According to investigators, the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was found discarded in the woods near the crime scene.

James has been charged as an adult and is currently being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center. The victim was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he remains in undisclosed condition.
