CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston Police Department will begin enforcing a new bicycle parking ordinance along King St. next month.

The new law prohibits riders to park or lock their bicycles to street lights, stop signs, meters, trees, or others structures on the King St. sidewalk, between Spring St. and Calhount St.

Police will impound all illegally parked bicycles. Owners will have to pay a $45 storage free to reclaim their property.

Bicycles parked along those sections of King St. cause a safety hazard for pedestrians, according to officials.

The city has installed over 100 public bike parking spaces to help implement the ordinance.
