CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - A downtown rally to stand against bullying and support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth is set to kick off this evening.

The 4th Annual Spirit Day rally and candle light vigil will take place Thursday, October 17 at the College of Charleston Physicians Auditorium from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Laverne Cox, an actress on the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black, will serve as the keynote speaker for the event.

Cox, who grew up a transgender youth, is among the first transgender women to have a role on a hit series. She plays transgender inmate Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black.

Those who attend the free rally are asked to wear purple in a stand against bullying and in support of LGBT youth.

The rally, hosted by We Are Family, will feature live music from Megan Jean and the KFB, and speeches by intersex youth, Devi Raheja, transgender youth, Sera Guerry and her mother Amy, and others.
