Ohio company puts gun plant in Horry Co.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP/WCSC) - An Ohio-based firearm manufacturer is building a plant in South Carolina that will employ 120 people.

The Ithaca Gun Company plans to spend nearly $7 million on the operation near Aynor.

According to a release, Ithaca will build a new 20,000-square-foot building at Horry County's Cool Springs Business Park.

"South Carolina continues to recruit manufacturing jobs to our state," said Gov. Nikki Haley in a statement. "We welcome Ithaca Gun Company to Horry County, and applaud their decision to invest over $6 million an create 120 new jobs along the Grand Strand."

Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation president Brad Lofton says the company will hire machine operators, gunsmiths, engineers, and assemblers.

The company is known for its shotguns and the Model 1911 pistol.

It was not immediately clear when construction will begin. Mike Farrell with Ithaca says he expects production to begin next year.
