(CNN) - Badly polluted air can cause cancer, according to a conclusion reached by the World Health Organization.

Thursday, at a conference in Switzerland, the WHO added air pollution to its list of recognized carcinogens.

WHO researchers said the more people are exposed to tiny particles in the air, the higher their risk of developing lung and bladder cancers.

It's estimated pollution led to more than 220,000 lung cancer deaths worldwide in 2010.
