COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials have identified a 54-year-old man who died after his car crashed into a tree in Walterboro early Monday morning.
Colleton County Coroner's Office identified the driver of Monday's fatal wreck as John Ramsey of Walterboro.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials say the accident happened on Can City Road.
According to authorities, the victim's car failed to negotiate a curve near the intersection of Rolling Brook Lane which caused the vehicle to enter a ditch and strike a pipe.
A report states the car then became airborne and crashed into a tree. Emergency officials say the crash broke the tree into several pieces and caused the car to split in half. The driver was ejected from the car.
Authorities say a motorist found the accident at 4:43 a.m. Investigators say evidence at the scene indicated that the crash happened several hours before the motorist found the accident scene.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
