SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) - The Socastee High School marching band will march to an anti-bullying beat at a state competition.
Their theme is "The Playground," an eight minute performance of four songs with a message for everyone.
Eighty-one band members at the school have been practicing three days a week for three hours since July. Last weekend, their anti-bullying program won them sixth place in the 4A lower state competition.
The group already has a number of trophies to their credit but with recent bullying episodes nationwide like the 12-year-old Florida girl who committed suicide after being bullied and now reports that a Nevada school shooter was bullied, the band's program means more.
Band members will march to songs by Radiohead and Shinedown. They plan to carry anti-bullying flags and disperse into separate groups representing popular versus the ostracized.
"I think it touches us all and the more things happen like that the more it brings the importance of what we are saying to the forefront," says band director Cheryl Polenick.
The team will learn how they've done sometime Saturday evening following the competition.
