Students kick off Red Ribbon Week to be drug free

TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -

Hundreds of students in Tift County are learning about the importance of being drug-free.

Tuesday county and city leaders gathered at 8th Street Middle School to kick off National Red Ribbon Week. Red ribbons have been placed around the community to symbolize a drug free life.

Sheriff Gene Scarbrough says he hopes today's event will encourage the students to say no to drugs.

"You just have to reach out and let them know and work with them and let them know that they don't have to have drugs to have a successful life," said Tift County Sheriff Scarbrough. "And if they do get into the drug world, whether a user or seller or whatever, then they're doomed. They're doomed."

The National Red Ribbon Campaign starts tomorrow and runs through the 31st.
