Ft. Benning celebrates the tenth annual Oktoberfest

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

There is a free event happening this weekend at Ft. Benning that is great for every member of your family.

Oktoberfest, the famous German festival, is coming to Ft. Benning. This is the tenth annual event.

"We started towing Friday, just towing the equipment out here, and we actually put our hands on it Monday," says John Lopez of the MWR event staff.

Workers, with a little help from the Army's finest, spent much of Tuesday morning turning the Activity Center at Uchee Creek into a Bavarian village. Two men, Wornie Smith and his son C.J., are responsible for this incredible artwork and construction.

"We build each section individually and then, this is the first time we've seen them erected. They're looking pretty good, look real good, I'm impressed. We've got to get the roofs on the rest of them, and once we get the roofs on them, they'll be good to go," says C.J.

The finished product should look like a taste of the Fatherland.

Oktoberfest means all things German, including the bunting being hung in the fest tent. Thousands are expected to attend the two-day event, a much bigger crowd than last year, according to Amanda Reitz, who is in charge of the event.

"We're actually going to have more beverage stations than in the past so the lines are a lot shorter. We'll have one inside the fest tent, as well as outside near the kids activity and then we'll have it in the normal storefront area," says Reitz.

Yes, there will be plenty of beer available, but there will be soft drinks too.

As always, everyone is welcome.
