2 charged with throwing bath salts out of car window

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Two men are facing charges after Richmond County deputies say they threw bath salts out of the car they were riding in.

Curran Harris and Eric Johnson are each charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and littering on a public roadway, according to the sheriff's office.

A deputy pulled the car over at about 4 p.m. Friday at the intersection of 15th Street and Walton Way, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies initially though someone in the car had thrown out trash, but when they took a closer look, they called the narcotics team out.

Authorities say bath salts are a powder-like substance and are a big problem for the area.

"The stimulant to the body can last anywhere between 6 and 8 hours," said Sgt. Michael McDaniel. "It's something that's been on the street heavily since probably 2006."

Harris and Johnson were booked at the Richmond County Jail. Johnson was released, but Harris is being held on a total bail of $2,700.
