Virus affecting dolphins on the East Coast reaches SC shores

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A virus that's been killing hundreds of dolphins in the Mid-Atlantic is now showing up right here in South Carolina.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirms that three dolphins that have washed up in the state tested positive for the virus, and scientists are waiting for the results from tests of more stranded dolphins.

The virus that's killing them is similar to measles in people, but humans can't catch the dolphin version.

There was a similar epidemic among dolphins in the late 1980's.
