IRONDALE, AL (WBRC) -

Irondale police say a 45-year-old Lineville man allegedly stalked a woman for days before kidnapping and sexually assaulting her this week.

Police have charged Richard Earl Hayes with stalking, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Officers say Hayes has been sending, flowers, threatening texts and emails to a 42-year-old female victim for the past 10 days.

On Tuesday, Hayes forced the victim to pull over on a road somewhere in St. Clair County, then kidnapped and sexually assaulted her. The attack happened sometime between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

"We've been able to obtain information where he has sent alarming texts and emails and has followed our victim around, followed her to place of employment when she's been out and about, so there's a lot of disturbing factors in this case," Sgt. Jason Hill with Irondale PD said.

Most of the stalking has happened in Jefferson County. Police believe Hayes or his associates may have been watching the victim's house.

Detectives say Hayes didn't know his victim directly, but believe he may have some connection to the victim's boyfriend.

"It's not a random act. This lady was specifically targeted, we're still trying to figure out why, exactly. To our residents here, we just want you to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles," Detective Michael Mangina with IPD said.

Hayes is described as 5'11", 230 pound man with brown eyes and black hair. He may be driving a gray Dodge Charger, a black truck or SUV or an older brown car.

"We need to get him off the streets. He is armed, we consider him dangerous," Mangina added.

Federal agents are working with the Irondale Police Department to locate Hayes. They have searched some of his old addresses in Lineville, Heflin and Jefferson County, but have not had any luck so far finding him.

Anyone with information about Hayes and his location is urged to call Irondale police.

We'll have more on this story tonight starting at 5 p.m.
