Detention officer accused of providing contraband to inmates fired

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The Charleston County Detention Center has fired a 33-year-old detention officer accused of providing contraband to inmates.

Investigators arrested Venetia D. White of Summerville on Wednesday and charged her with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to a prisoner. She has since been fired.

The sheriff's office says White's arrest stems from an investigation that started on Oct. 17 after a cell phone was found during a search of the Al Cannon Detention Center.

According to investigators, it was determined that White was responsible for providing cell phones, alcohol, electrical tape and lighters to inmates.  A report stated that it does not appear that other detention officers were involved in the incident.

White was hired in August of 2011 and was placed on unpaid administrative leave. She is set to have a bond hearing on Thursday.
