Authorities say earlier reports of a man who is a well-known fixture east of the Cooper being hit by a car were false.

A Mount Pleasant Police Department report says Hassie Holmes is recovering from unnamed health issues. Police say they were called out to check on Holmes' condition, and found him in poor condition after receiving calls by the public to check on him.

East Cooper Hospital spokeswoman Kari Davis confirms Holmes is hospitalized and in stable condition.

Known in the Lowcountry as "Hassie", Holmes is the longtime operator of a newsstand at the corner of Houston Northcutt and Johnnie Dodds. He works there seven days a week.

"Hassie is definitely a town character, and he's one of the things that makes up Mt. Pleasant as being so unique," says his longtime friend, Wiliam Daniels.

According to a Facebook post by Mark Smith, Holmes says he was traveling to work on his bike last Friday when he was hit by a vehicle.

"I'm not sure when I will get out, but I'm thankful that the sun came up today," Holmes reportedly told Smith.
