Babysitter accused of soliciting sex from girl, showing obscene videos to brother

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A 57-year-old man is accused of soliciting sex from a teenager and showing the victim's brother obscene videos.

Detectives arrested Emmett Roger Craven of Charleston Wednesday afternoon and charged him with criminal solicitation of a minor, first-degree assault and battery and dissemination of obscene material to a minor. Court records state Craven was a "family friend" of the victim and would routinely babysit the victim and her brother.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office says the charges are a result of an investigation that began on Oct. 5 after the victim's parents reported that Craven had inappropriate contact with their teenaged daughter on several occasions.

An affidavit states between May 22 and Sept. 30, 2012, the female victim went to Folly Beach with Craven, and while she was swimming, Craven came up behind the victim and inappropriately touched her.

The victim reported that she tried to stop him, but she was not strong enough. According to the victim, Craven asked her multiple times to have sex with her to which she replied,"No."

Authorities say the victim also reported that Craven had slapped her on the buttocks when she was out of the water. Detectives say the victim was 17 years old at the time of the incident.

Craven is also accused of showing a sex toy to the victim at his home on James Island when the victim was 15 years old.

Investigators say Craven also showed videos and pictures of people engaged in sexual acts to the victim's brother who was 12 years old at the time and had asked him if he wanted to "teach him to have sex."

Craven was given a $150,000 bond.
