One person dead, another hospitalized following I-26 wreck

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol says one person is dead and another has been hospitalized following an accident on I-26 in Summerville Friday afternoon.

The accident happened at 1:40 p.m. near mile marker 198 when a vehicle left the roadway and struck several trees.

The driver was flown to MUSC, while the passenger died on scene. The coroner's office identified the passenger as 68-year-old Mary Ann Rice from Tennessee who died from blunt force body trauma. Authorities say she was entrapped in the vehicle and was extricated by the fire department.

The accident shut down all westbound lanes as an emergency helicopter landed on the scene.

According to emergency officials, the accident happened in the median of I-26.

Highway patrol is investigating the accident.
