CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

The Wishing Well Foundation is a non-profit that grants wishes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

Today, a benefit was held at the Lake Charles Gun Club.

Organizers and volunteers include District Attorney John DeRosier, the Young Men's Business Club, and Delta Downs.

On Friday, shooters took their aim, for the first annual Clay Shoot Benefit.

"This is an event that is raising money for the Wishing Well program," said District Attorney John DeRosier.

It's a program that helps grant wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses.

"Dash was born with Spina Bifida and he's had many surgeries and procedures. And he's really become strong and healthy and happy and he's doing really well," said his mother, Stephanie Barrett.

Dash was a previous recipient of the Wishing Well program.

"Our son's wish was a trip to Disney World and it was right at a good point when he was really healthy, so we had a wonderful, wonderful family experience," said Barrett.

Dash says his favorite part was, "going on the roller coaster."

"We generally raise money several ways, one of which has been primarily golf tournaments. And it's getting to be where there's so many golf tournaments that we decided to change it up a little bit. And we're doing this sporting clay event and it looks like it's going to be a big success in its first year," said DeRosier.

Teams paid $100 per person, most of which goes back towards helping children like Dash.

"It makes everybody that participates feel great. Everybody wants to put back in the community and this is an excellent opportunity for that to happen," said DeRosier.

Delta Downs was a major sponsor last year and again this year.

"We donated $10,000 towards the Wishing Well program," said Delta Downs Entertainment and Public Relations Manager, Nora Popillion.

And today Dash got to shoot with those contributing towards the program that once helped him.

"We're just really grateful for the Wishing Well Foundation. I mean they do so many wonderful things for families here and they're local and it's just so important for us to support these local organizations that do so much for families," said Barrett.

The Wishing Well program began in 1985 and covers five parishes.

Today's event raised $21,000.
