Detention center officer charged with driving under the influence

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has charged a 51-year-old detention center officer with driving under the influence.

Deputies have arrested Anthony E. Middleton of Charleston who is employed at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

On Sunday at 3 a.m., a deputy on I-26 says he spotted a car which was failing to stay on one lane as it was traveling down the highway. The deputy then stopped the vehicle and spoke to Middleton who was driving the car.

A report states that while the deputy was speaking with Middleton, he noticed Middleton had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and also detected an odor of alcohol coming from him.

Middleton was placed under arrest after authorities say he failed sobriety tests. According to the sheriff's office, Middleton was transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center where investigators say he refused a breathalyzer test.

Middleton has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an investigation into the arrest.
