85-year-old replica of noted train returning to Charleston

Charleston, SC (AP) -

Charleston's second best friend is returning home.

The Best Friend of Charleston was the first train in the nation offering regularly scheduled passenger service. It was destroyed in an explosion in 1831 about six months after it went into service.

Eighty-five years ago, a replica was constructed. Now that replica, which for the past five years has been on display at Norfolk Southern's corporate headquarters in Atlanta, is returning to Charleston.

The train is being moved this weekend into a new glass-sided building in Charleston's historic district that will serve as a museum about Best Friend. The public is being invited to watch Sunday as the train is set on rails in the museum that are being installed this week.

The museum opens to the public next year.
