COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A scholarship fund and civil litigation training program are being set up to honor late trial attorney Ron Motley.
Motley Rice LLC said Thursday the firm had established the Ronald L. Motley Memorial Fund at the University of South Carolina School of Law.
The effort will help provide scholarships for incoming law students who are committed to pursuing careers in civil litigation. Through the training program, third-year law students will get practice doing mock litigation.
Motley died in August at age 68. He served as lead counsel in lawsuits that ultimately yielded the largest civil settlement in U.S. history in which the tobacco industry agreed to reimburse states for smoking-related health care costs.
