Sugar content in treats exceeds recommended allowance

How much sugar is too much? The daily recommended amount might surprise you as we checked out the top five candies handed out for Halloween.

First, we determined how much sugar experts said your children should consume for an entire day, and then we compared that to the amount of sugar in those popular Halloween treats.

Let's start with the recommended intake of sugar. The American Heart Association said children should consume no more than 25 to 37.5 grams of sugar per day. That includes the sum total from every meal and snack.

We found the sugar content of top five most popular Halloween candies online:

  1. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups – 21g
  2. Fun-size M&M's – 29g
  3. Fun-size Snickers – 17g
  4. Fun-size Hershey's – 22g
  5. Snack-size Snickers – 21g

Any one of these candies will thus take up two-thirds of a child's recommended daily sugar intake. Beyond the obvious issues with too many sweets, such as hyperactivity and sugar crashes, experts said added sugar is just empty calories that put children at risk of obesity and other health problems.
