Report: Rescue crews respond to island after pedestrians spot drunk man

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

Emergency rescue crews were called out to the Arthur Ravenel Bridge after authorities say pedestrians spotted a drunk man on an island below the bridge.

On Sunday at 8:11 a.m. Charleston police officers responded to the Ravenel Bridge in reference to pedestrians seeing a man on Drum Island that appeared to be "disoriented and cold."

Authorities say they observed a man, later identified as a 35-year-old Mt. Pleasant man,  lying on the west shore of the island in a fetal position. According to a police report, the man was going back and forth between floating in shallow water and lying on the shore.

Police said the man was also stumbling around and appeared to be "extremely disoriented."

Mount Pleasant emergency crews then responded to the scene and rappelled down to the island from the pedestrian walkway on the bridge. The man was then placed on a North Charleston fire boat and taken to shore where he was transported to MUSC.

The man told police that he was working at Art's Bar and Grill in Mt. Pleasant, and afterwards began drinking alcohol heavily. He said the next thing he could remember was swimming "for a really long time" in the water.

According to the man, once he made it to Drum Island he tried for hours to "call out for a blanket or coat because he was freezing."

The man said he was unable to remember how he got into the water from the bar because he was extremely intoxicated. A police report states the man was not injured.
