CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A referendum to increase the sales tax in Dorchester County by one percent has been denied by voters for the fourth straight time.
The Dorchester County Sales Tax Referendum failed to pass Tuesday, with 7,070 residents voting no, and only 3,550 voting yes.
If the measure passed, the sales tax would have gone up to 8 percent. That is the same as Berkeley County and slightly lower than Charleston County, which stands at 8.5 percent.
Registered voters hit the polls for a number of elections throughout the Tri-County area Tuesday.
There are several cities and towns that will have mayor and council elections. They include Georgetown, Moncks Corner, Summerville, and Edisto Beach.
