Baby Veronica's adoptive parents file $1 million lawsuit against Dusten Brown

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The adoptive parents of Baby Veronica have filed a lawsuit in Oklahoma asking for more than $1 million for attorney fees and court costs related to their recent custody battle.

The lawsuit, filed by Matt and Melanie Capobianco of James Island, is against the Cherokee Nation and Dusten Brown, Veronica's biological father.

In September, Brown handed Veronica over to the Capobiancos after the Oklahoma Supreme Court lifted an emergency stay keeping the girl in Oklahoma.

Brown, a member of the Cherokee Nation, argued that federal law favors his keeping custody of the child, but the U.S. Supreme Court said this summer that the Indian Child Welfare Act does not apply to the case.
